Desk Phone Has No Dial Tone or Won't Register
A desk phone that won't connect is usually a network or power issue. These steps resolve most cases.
Step-by-step
- 1
Check the network cable
Make sure the Ethernet cable is firmly seated in the phone's LAN/Internet port and in the wall jack or switch. Try a different cable or port to rule them out.
- 2
Confirm power
If the screen is blank, the phone isn't getting power. Check the PoE switch or plug in the power adapter.
- 3
Verify your internet is up
Cloud phones need internet. Confirm other devices can browse the web; if the internet is down, fix that first (see our network guides).
- 4
Reboot the phone
Unplug the phone (and power) for 30 seconds, then reconnect and let it fully start and re-register.
- 5
Check the registration status
If the screen shows 'not registered,' 'no service,' or an error, the phone can't reach the phone system — usually a network or configuration issue.
- 6
Factory reset only if instructed
Don't factory reset unless we walk you through it — it erases the configuration and the phone will need to be re-provisioned.
Helpful tips
- A whole office losing phones at once points to the internet or network, not the phones.
- Power-cycling your router, switch, and phone in order often restores service.
