Create Strong Passwords and Turn On 2FA
Most account breaches come from weak or reused passwords. These simple habits dramatically improve your security.
Step-by-step
- 1
Use long, unique passwords
Make each password at least 12–16 characters and different for every account. Length matters more than complex symbols.
- 2
Use a password manager
A password manager creates and remembers strong, unique passwords for you, so you only memorize one master password.
- 3
Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
Enable 2FA on important accounts (email, banking, social). It adds a second step — a code or app prompt — that blocks most account takeovers.
- 4
Prefer an authenticator app
Where possible, use an authenticator app or hardware key instead of SMS codes for stronger protection.
- 5
Secure your email first
Your email can reset other accounts, so protect it with your strongest password and 2FA before anything else.
Helpful tips
- Never reuse your email password anywhere else.
- Watch for phishing — legitimate companies won't ask for your password or 2FA code by message.
