Laptop Won't Charge? Here's What to Check
A laptop that won't charge is often a cable, port, or power issue rather than a dead battery. Work through these checks.
Step-by-step
- 1
Test the outlet and adapter
Confirm the wall outlet works, and that the charger is fully connected at both the wall and the laptop. Check the charger's light if it has one.
- 2
Inspect the cable and port
Look for frayed cables, bent pins, or lint and debris in the charging port. Gently clean the port with compressed air if needed.
- 3
Try a power reset
Shut down, unplug the charger, and (if removable) take out the battery for 30 seconds. Reconnect and power on — this resets the charging circuit.
- 4
Check the charging indicator
Look at the battery icon: 'plugged in, not charging' often points to a battery-health issue, while no response at all suggests the charger or port.
- 5
Let it charge undisturbed
A deeply drained battery may need 15–30 minutes before it shows any charge or powers on. Leave it plugged in and wait.
Helpful tips
- Using the manufacturer's original charger (or a quality equivalent with the right wattage) prevents many charging problems.
- Swelling, heat, or rapid battery drain means the battery should be replaced soon — we can do that safely.
