Computer Won't Turn On
A computer that won't start is often caused by something simple — power, cables, or a stuck state. Try these steps in order; many issues are fixed in minutes.
Step-by-step
- 1
Check the power source
Make sure the outlet works (test it with a lamp or another device), the power cable is firmly connected at both ends, and any power strip or surge protector is switched on.
- 2
Confirm it's the monitor, not the PC
If you hear fans or see lights but no picture, the computer may be on while the display isn't. Check the monitor's power and cable, and that it's set to the correct input source.
- 3
Do a power drain (reset)
Unplug the computer (remove the laptop battery if possible), hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge residual power, then plug back in and try again.
- 4
Disconnect extra devices
Unplug USB drives, printers, and accessories — a faulty peripheral can block startup. Then power on with only the essentials connected.
- 5
Listen and look for clues
Beeps, blinking lights, or a fan spinning briefly can indicate where the problem is. Note any patterns to share with a technician.
Helpful tips
- For laptops, a completely dead battery can prevent startup — leave it charging for 15–30 minutes, then try again.
- A burning smell or no fan movement at all may indicate a power-supply failure — stop and seek professional help.
