Free Up Disk Space on Windows
When your storage is nearly full, your computer slows down and can't install updates. Here's how to free up space without deleting anything important.
Step-by-step
- 1
Empty the Recycle Bin / Trash
Deleted files still take up space until the bin is emptied. This is the quickest win.
- 2
Use built-in cleanup tools
On Windows, search 'Storage settings' or run 'Disk Cleanup' to remove temporary files, caches, and old updates. On Mac, use Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage → Manage.
- 3
Uninstall unused programs
Remove apps and games you no longer use from your settings — large programs free up the most space.
- 4
Move large files to external or cloud storage
Photos, videos, and archives can be moved to an external drive or cloud storage to free local space.
- 5
Clear browser cache and downloads
Old downloads and browser caches can use several gigabytes. Clear them and empty your Downloads folder of files you've saved elsewhere.
